Our country lies in ruins from the blood that we have spilt with our own hands; from our very own undoing we see this day the sight of things to come, our own demise.
We used to be a peace loving country with the people’s lives only revolving around the need to eat and the need to live. We had our own beliefs, culture and nationalism. The only path available to us was to go forward; to progress beyond our most unimaginable dreams and be like all those other countries out there. To simple folk this was just step too far for their liking, but there were some of us that dared to dream. And then came the golden age of our country; we stuck to our beliefs and culture and we progressed beyond our wildest dreams and we were happy. We were home free on our way to glory and to establish ourselves in the world, which would be considered such a great establishment for a country of our own stature.
But then came the black cloud that is now hanging over our heads. The path available to us came with a heavy price, which we are now seeing in almost all the countries in the world; hatred, vanity, greed, hunger, death just all the consequences of progress. We always want more, what we can’t have is what we crave the most. We were on a great path and we wanted more, and thus black cloud is looming over own heads.
We had a clear cut government that did their job to protect the people; granted they might have done some things that they were not proud of for the good of the country, they still protected us. We progressed and we decided to question our government, which in turn lead to factions between the people. The people of religion, the so called well educated people who knew the way of the world, and the existing government. Then came their foot soldiers that did almost anything for money; puppets if you will. The verbal abuse started and is still raging on, between skirmishes created by the puppet master’s using the puppets that eventually become the casualties.
The people revolt and we the people are playing into the hands of these puppet masters. We need to unite and not fall for these tricks of war and have an open mind about what’s going now; not falling into the pot holes they are laying down for us. What happened today was sad and uncalled for and would hurt us in the long run. We don’t know who did what and how all his came to play. We shouldn’t go on blaming certain factions until the facts have been cleared. Blaming religion on this whole ordeal is not going to solve anything. We don’t have any hidden underground layers for extremists to breed in, which is of course the most common philosophy of choice people are choosing to believe.
We are what we are, what we choose to be; we like being controlled, being fed lies so that we won’t have to face the truth. That we are but mere humans with human tendencies to wreak havoc and ruin lives, but we also have the ability to love and that is the common truth that we must rely on.

People who are going around claiming Maldivians have always been a hospitable people who have welcome visitors to these islands maybe referring to another peaceful time (Ibn Batuta, in his ramblings, refers to this time before the arrival of Islam )
Are we forgetting that the Frenchman Pyraaad’s shipmates were left to die of starvation?

What is the blood you shed for this country? Your generation does not even shed a sweat on for this land. Bangaalhees and the Indians has done more to this country than you. Dont talk bullshit like Bush talks about America.

The creepy population is increasing day by day…. Now it will be hard to wipe them off. I believe we don’t party politics in our country.
If we all love peace, we sould abondon and drop the idea of potical parties ruling. With my extensive research it doesn’t show any good, really.

XefroX : I am.
Aminath : We brought this upon ourselves. We wanted our family members out of jail even after the crimes that they comitted, and the government had no choice but to free them. Now look at what’s happening. Pandemonium. Stealing from shops in broad daylight, and the police can’t do anything about it because the public is protecting them.
Zurich : It’s in the literary meaning you sick ****. The blood we spilt was of the tourists. One of us is responsible but the whole country will be held accountable and this will effect our income from tourism. Go back and deal with your toad of a president, that is well if your an american.

Hi Maail,
Good stuff, but…
Not all countries in the world have hatred, vanity, greed and hunger. As individuals citizens of any country may have those feelings on a personal level. And yes, no country has been able to abolish ‘death’ yet.
In any case these are not consequences of progress. It wouldn’t be called ‘progress’ at all if people of a country were going hungry, say, or even hating each other. Majority of the people in much of the so-called developed world are happy and content. Obviously it isn’t the same in the developing world. Most are, as you say, hungry and angry and acting like a bunch of monkeys (my own words, not Maail’s).
Why we crave what we cannot have is part of human nature. It is what what makes us go after that elusive girl or boy that we so want to date .. so on and so forth.
We were never on a great path. As a people, we Maldivians are extremely ignorant and, well, as I like to say, indolent too. So we don’t mind living a life of subsistence as long as someone keeps telling us that “that is progress” and we should be happy and gay. Just because we own an iPod and the latest mobile phone doesn’t mean we’ve progressed when at the end of the day we go to sleep in a 6 by 6 room that has no ventilation and pay through our teeth to do so.
From what do you think has the government protecting us? Shark attacks? Mosquito bites? Bats? It hasn’t protected us from outbreaks of outlandishly named diseases, it has not protected our health in general – not when we have to beg and borrow our way to afford medical assistance. That also from another country. The government has not provided us to the means of achieving a good retirement. Most of us have nothing in our ’savings” account by the end of the 3rd week. We don’t have financial laws, we don’t have banking laws, we don’t have health insurance. How are we supposed to feel safe here?
We even have a judicial system that someone bought from Toys ‘R Us.
Our education system is so fabulous that it produces O’level gradutes who don’t know how to read English properly. This government has managed to create, with this fabulous education system, 2 generations of good-for-nothing imbeciles few of who end up doing flashy degrees (if lucky) in astrophysics and genetics to come back home and serve the country pushing paper and drinking coffee.
Yes, this is a clear cut government. Cut, it is, clear off of it’s rudder to navigate at all.
Indeed, we started questioning our government. It is something we should have done a long, long time ago. Some people woke up from our lazy sleep and thought .. ‘wait a goddamn minute, this ain’t going right!’. It wasn’t the people that revolted, it was the government that did that.
You are right, having an open mind is good. But something tells me we have yet to know what being open minded really means. Most of us think it is being open minded about sex or drugs or being gay. It’s a hip thing. But hey, who am I to know any better.
See, we are a laid back people. The bomb has definitely hurt us where it is most sensitive. Everyone knows that it’s going to affect tourism which in turn will affect everything else in this country. But hey, if we can still have our lattes at Trends, and our ‘dhufun’ at the gaadiyaa no one’s going lose their cool over it. If anything we should revolt against this kind of behaviour. We should be protesting. We should be marching. We should be uniting in letting whoever did this know that we ain’t gonna take this sitting down.
But har har, we ARE going to sit down and we ARE going to take it until the next time. And then until the next time. And then until the next time. And then until the next time. And then until the next time. That’s no typo, that’s how it’s going to be. That’s how we have taken it from this government over the last 2 decades.
You might have not been privy to this information but there is a growing infestation of extremism in this country and it needs to be dealt with – NOT with violent attacks but with education, more education and even more education. Oh but wait! The education system is screwed up so there is really no way out of this, is it? You better believe it: if there is any finger pointing at any group of people right now, it is pointing at the religious far right. The more we deny that this extreme form of religion is harmless the more in harms way we will be. The only way to fight it is by educating people.
Yes, yes. We are what we are. We don’t like being controlled though. It is just that we don’t know when we ARE being controlled. It is that simple. It is not a human tendency to wreak havoc. It is a human tendency to fight oppression and for rights. As long as a bunch of people think they are oppressed, or are suffering because of some other people, then they wreak havoc and ruin lives. Just ask the extremist who think the rest of the world has got it wrong and has cast them aside.
Most of us will not know how to react to what happened today. Most will just shrug and say ‘what can we do?”.

Simon. It’s been an honour.Hat’s off.I made you write
I actually think our education system is pretty good. Most of the student’s who complete o’level speaks better english than the chinese people here in Malaysia. I’m serious here. Their spelling is wrong as well as grammer and I’m talking about one of the most sophisticated schools in Malaysia where you have to wear formal clothes to attend.
Look at the o’level results last year for Maldives. I think a student got the best in Biology in the whole world right? And the number of students who are in the top ten are increasing year by year, don’t you think it’s a vast improvement? It’s a world wide course after all.
Now on the subject of most of you not having anything in your saving’s account, it depends on the person. Most of them go to so called coffee’s and throw their money away into non trivial matters, I’m talking about young people who are not married and doesn’t have to provide for their families who I know a lot of. And yeah the government pay is crap, even after doing a degree, that’s why absolutely I’m not going to join the government
. That’s something they have to improve on, but that’s not going to happen I guess.
Yeah your right. Extremism has been growing and I haven’t been well informed of it, and I know now since I’ve looked up on it. We Maldivians are ignorant fool’s who just mind their own business and move on with their lives, and I’m one of them.
We need to do something about this but which side do we take? What’s right and what’s wrong? The party opposing the government ain’t true to their word at all. They make up stuff to condemn the current government, and our current government is doing the same. What would happen if we get another president? I’ll say the same thing. People have the same tendencies, they will take their cut of the money as they see fit and they will do the ‘evil deeds’ that we would realise later on. More factions will be formed and the cycle would continue wouldn’t it?
There’s no going back now. Our country is practically going to the dogs, and is there anything we can do about it? So I guess I’m in the majority of most of the people, lost.
